Claris FileMaker Pro’s few years have shown us just how challenging business leaders can be. Now, more than ever, you need to rotate quickly based on rapidly changing needs. To succeed in this environment, you need a technology strategy that aligns with your business vision. You have the idea that technology can help you, but “boiling the ocean” is not the answer, you need quick wins, one at a time delivering value across your entire business. Therefore, it makes no sense to tackle enterprise-level projects that take a long time and cost a lot. It’s about being flexible and using responsive technology to instantly address your most pressing problems so that you can quickly move to new requirements and solve emerging problems. Make technology work for you, not the other way around. The Claris platform is uniquely suited to help companies like yours quickly build.
Iterate on customized, integrated solutions faster and more efficiently than any other platform on the market. Unlike other software applications out there that are too lightweight and customizable or too complex and rigid, Claris is flexible enough to meet your specific and evolving needs. This week, Apple subsidiary Claris released a new update for FileMaker, its cross-platform relational database program. FileMaker 19.5 includes support for new JSON functions, as well as security improvements and overall improvements. According to the company, the FileMaker update makes the platform more secure. For example, remote FMP URLs now require approval, and users can choose to be notified before an FMP URL opens a file. With FileMaker 19.5, the platform now supports more JSON functions, such as GetElementType, GetLiveText, and ReadQRCode. With these functions, developers can get the text in the selected container image using the same algorithm.

Apple’s Live Text, as well as reading a QR code from an image. When it comes to scripting, FileMaker now allows you to save data from the current window by leaving the “Window Name” option blank in the Save a Copy as XML and Save a Copy as Add-on Package script steps. Another important improvement is the preservation of the empty tab order of copied objects so that the pasted object now has no tab order. About a year ago, we summarized all the changes that Claris has collected in FileMaker 19 since the original 19.0 release. You can find this overview here; It covers FileMaker 19.0 to 19.2.2 (March 2021). A year later, a lot has happened in the past 12 months. Time for another summary highlighting the most relevant changes.
For a full overview of all changes, check out the release notes for each release in the Claris Knowledge Base. This was a quick-release patch to fix some issues with the new Edge web viewer engine on Windows. It contains a fix for interactive PDFs on Windows and has introduced a behavior change that makes interactive containers download entirely and not stream from the server. One not widely known feature is FileMaker’s hidden data tables, which are tables containing schema definitions that you can query using the ExecuteSQL () function. Figure 19.4.1 adds a new data table called FileMaker BaseTableFields. Whereas the existing FileMaker Fields spreadsheet lists all files for all tasks on the relationship graph, this new table only reports fields for each actual primary table, not for each of them. And there were some significant bug fixes that you can read about in the release notes.

But we want to mention one particularly annoying one that caused apps to close inadvertently when using the OnWindowClose event trigger. FileMaker Cloud updates more silently than other products on the platform, largely because, as a managed hosting offering, Claris takes care of all the backend operations. Most releases exist to support features elsewhere in the platform and to fix cloud-specific issues. Here’s a quick overview of his releases in the past year. While WebDirect is a big part of FileMaker Server, I want to call out some specific changes so they don’t get lost in the shuffle. FileMaker Go, which began life as a seriously powerful $30 iPad app, should now be considered a must-have portable database program among desktop FileMaker Pro users. The database program’s excellent design, multiple file layouts, integrated search, and digital signature capture.
Graphing capabilities made it a compelling offering when it first came out, but FileMaker Go 12 ups the ante with enhanced multimedia capabilities, multitasking support, and best of all. is new. Complimentary! There are still a few niggles you still can’t create new files but FileMaker Go 12 is an iPad database app that can keep you productive on the go. FileMaker Go 12 is designed to do one thing: run FileMaker Pro 12 (both Standard and Advanced versions) on the Apple menu. However, you cannot create new files with FileMaker.
Highlights
- User interface
Given FileMaker Pro’s ease of use, it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to learn that its interface is well-organized, user-friendly, and easy to navigate. A good starting point is to use one of the many templates and see how it works, then make changes to get things going.
- Competition
Do a Google search for “FileMaker Pro alternatives” and you’ll find plenty of candidates. This includes Ninox, Zoho Creator, and Kintone, among others. If your organization is looking for something more powerful than FileMaker Pro can provide, consider any of our favorite database software titles. Elsewhere, Symphyturn is an often-cited open-source alternative. The main reasons to consider the alternatives are the scalability and additional features offered by the larger relational database options.

Advantages
- It allowed us to grow and customize our database in ways that prevent us from using other software. Being able to create scripts and reports on the go is great for collecting and presenting data.”
- There are plenty of tutorials and educational materials on the Internet. It helps us save hours and hours every day.
- I’ve used FileMaker in a manufacturing setting for over 20 years. It is a great solution for bringing different data together in one solution.
- This database manager is suitable for MAC users. Easy to use with great migration to/from Access.
Disadvantages
- It wouldn’t be so bad if I could upgrade but it doesn’t seem like I can’t upgrade from my version to Filemaker Pro.
- The company was not accepting our payment method, and we kept getting automated emails threatening to cut back on service.
Over the years, the FMP license has gotten progressively worse. If I can find another solution, I will.
